Embrace the Romance and Win A Kindle Fire

Hello all, as you know Carly and Miki are close to my heart and my new story, ‘A Grim Pet’, that is included in ‘Embrace the Romance’, allowed me to revisit them. Not in the way so many of you are wanting, with the story of Grim and Lisa’s baby but that is coming. I promise. ‘A Grim Pet’ continues to tie my two worlds together, the Tornians and the Kaliszians, and will expand them. It lets you into the way my crazy mind thinks, (my hubby will be glad to know he’s not alone), and the futures that are waiting for Carly and Miki.

I hope you support our efforts to help hero-dogs.org.

And He Dances, too…

By Pauline Baird Jones

Have you ever had a character surprise the heck out of you?

When I created Master Sergeant Briggs in The Key, (my first Project Enterprise book) he was a rough, gruff military guy who told Sara Donovan she flew — and crashed — like a girl.

Not politically correct in any way, shape or form.

And then, Sara ran into him in the gym and I thought they were going to have a throw down and instead, they, well, they…

[SPOILERS, sweetie, if you have haven’t read The Key]

…started dancing.

Like seriously cool, ballroom type dancing. Samba rolls, the cha-cha-cha, and quick steps. The whole nine yards.

The tough guy liked to dance. (It’s actually a very good workout.)

I kind of blinked and went, okaaaaay.

But all his dance partners married someone else. (Love happens)

So when I was looking for who needed a story, Briggs kind of cleared his throat.

In a really ominous way.

In an “excuse me, but I’ve been waiting a long time and I’m getting pissed” way.

But who was the right gal for a guy like Briggs?

A time rebel was a good start, but could she dance? Read Time Trap to find out.

Excerpt:

She seemed about to say something, but instead she rolled over and got up, the movement of her body smooth and graceful.

Oh yeah, she was a girl. If he’d had any doubts after the close proximity check. Almost idly, he thought, bet she could dance a great cha-cha.

Time Trap

A Novella in the Project Enterprise Series

Hiding in time is not as easy as you’d think…

Madison lives by the rules of a time travel rebel – never tell anyone your real name, not if you want to remain alive. On the track of a traitor, Madison and her parrot partner, Sir Rupert, time travel into a trap. Their only way out sends them back in time and into the arms of a man that ignites a fire inside her.

USAF Master Sergeant Briggs is in trouble – not the kind he’d like to be, but still in trouble. He is bored out of his mind! Ordered to recuperate on a quiet bay away from the Garradian outpost, he’s ready to mutiny and go back to his beloved engines. When his friends send him a gift from Area 51, he figures it will relieve his boredom for an hour or so – until he turns it on and he gets his second present of the day.

Madison would love to get to know Briggs better, but it is just too dangerous. Unfortunately, she might not have much choice. With a Time Service Interdiction Force on their heels, can the three craft a plan that will save a base full of geniuses and technology and discover a happy-ever-after forged through time?

The Sheeban: Starship and Metaphor

I am delighted to have Laurie A. Green on my blog today. Laurie is one of my co-authors in Embrace the Romance: Pets in Space 2.

When Captain Navene Jagger is temporarily reassigned as the commanding officer of the Carduwan Fifth Fleet’s battleship Imperative to fly an antiquated little “hunk of junk” in Courting Disaster: StarDog 2, he’s far from pleased. This is his first meeting with his new ship, the Sheeban.

Jagger stood at the docking bay entrance, trying to find any positives in this gigadam boondoggle. He’d be flying solo, he reminded himself, just like the glory days of slicing through space in his Rimcraft Stiletto. It might not be all bad. That thought tumbled and burned the moment he caught sight of the shipwreck at the end of the boarding passage.

He checked the bay number again. Yes. Right bay. He just couldn’t believe what was berthed there.

The Sheeban’s battered two-deck carcass could’ve been a clunky, mid-ranged compost hauler that had seen its best days millennia ago. They wanted him to transport an ambassador’s daughter on this wreck?

Ah, but just as you should never judge a book by its cover, you should also never judge a starship by her battered exterior. Sheeban has a few surprises in store—for both Jagger and for readers.

Though it’s very subtle, and I doubt many readers who don’t happen to read this blog will make the connection, the Sheeban is actually a metaphor for Captain Jagger himself.

Jagger, the most highly decorated captain in the Carduwan Fifth Fleet, is the real shipwreck in this story. But unlike Sheeban, he’s a derelict on the inside. He’s a man suffering from deep personal loss, heartache, guilt and regret, and he camouflages his battle scars with a façade of pride and ambition. He has a driving desire to become the most elite of the elite—Fleet Admiral—because he no longer believes there’s anything else in life worth living for.

When Jagger begins to understand the significance of the vessel he’s been entrusted to pilot, it’s the start of his awakening, in more ways than one. Just like Sheeban, maybe all he needs is someone who can see beyond his battlescars and pull him from the proverbial salvage yard.

Ketsia Tayah is the woman he’s been assigned to escort aboard the Sheeban—and with the mission they’re given new identities…as a married team of spacefreighters! Jagger soon realizes her past is entangled with his own, and though he feels a strong attraction to her that he cannot—and will not—act on, she also brings a very painful reminder of what he’s lost…and why.

When the mission is suddenly thrust into jeopardy, Jagger must make some very tough choices, for better or worse.

There’s a final twist involving Jagger and Sheeban at the end of the story. Without serving up any spoilers, let’s just say that Jagger is just as surprised as I hope readers will be. It seemed a fitting outcome for a man and his metaphor.

The Future of Pets

by Carol Van Natta, co-author in Embrace the Romance: Pets in Space 2

Humans love pets. We’ll domesticate anything that will sit still long enough, provide a useful service or food source, or give us companionship. What if you could, for a price, have creatures from history, mythology, or fantasy, such as a Tasmanian tiger, a chimera, or a foo dog?

In “Pet Trade,” my novella in the Embrace the Romance: Pets in Space 2 anthology, I took the opportunity to explore a hidden facet of the civilization in my Central Galactic Concordance space opera-action-romance series. Whereas the CGC has strict laws and harsh penalties against tinkering with human genetics and DNA, animals aren’t so lucky. Even reputable pet trade researchers, genetic designers, bio-engineers, and dealers put profit over compassion. Shadier, cut-throat companies operate in hidden facilities and smuggle their wares past customs inspectors. Think of the worst of pet traders as a cross between negligent backyard breeders and the ruthless smugglers who sell endangered wild animals to wealthy collectors.

In the CGC, foundation and cornerstone animal species are protected by laws and enforcement. Ordinary companion and domesticated animals—cats, dogs, foxes, birds, cattle, sheep, buffalo, etc.—are protected against pet-trade intellectual property claims. The real profit in the pet trade industry is in recreations of extinct species, genetically engineered creatures from imagination and mythology, and enhanced versions of domestic animals. The pet trade researchers and designers breed whatever they think will sell, and hope to create lucrative fads. Want a miniature dinosaur, or a small dragon? Wish you could have one of the Pleistocene megafauna for a pet? How about your very own foo dog, a miniature version of the large, lion-like guardians of Chinese temples? Or an animal dreamed up by a futuristic fantasy artist made to seem like an alien creature?

This is the backdrop for “Pet Trade,” where Bethnee Bakonin, a veterinarian who escaped the worst of the industry, must confront her dark past if she’s to help Axur Tragon, an ex-elite forces Jumper with cybernetic limbs and secrets of his own, fend off greedy mercenaries who are raiding the town. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Pets in Space story without pets. One of Axur’s pets is a chimera, a designer’s fantasy with about the size of a German Shepherd, but the resemblance ends there. He has black and brown stripes in his short, sleek fur, six legs and two tails with tufts of fur on the ends. He is, as Axur puts it, “a prime example of what the anti-pet trade activists railed against: tinkering with Terran genetics to create whimsical life forms that would have never survived in the wild, much less natural selection.”

Here’s a snippet from “Pet Trade,” where Bethnee examines Kivo for the first time.

Axur turned his attention back to Kivo. “Why did they create him at all?” She shrugged. “Pretend alien fauna for the wealthy, maybe? It’s a fad.” She stroked the large hump of Kivo’s middle shoulder joints. “The bio-engineers actually got the six legs to work, but the rest of him is a fantasy hodgepodge.” She snorted disdainfully. “Two tails.” She rested her hip against the table and eased the weight off her stiffer leg. “

He follows me everywhere. He keeps the peace among the other animals, too.” He tilted his head. “Can animals be empaths? I think he tries to cheer me up sometimes.” It sounded daft after he said it out loud, so he was grateful she didn’t laugh. “

Maybe? Medical scientists still don’t know what combination of DNA and subtrans amino arrays make the difference between human minders and non-minders, or even the gender expression continuum. Who’s to say that animals aren’t evolving along with us?”
